The forty-year heritage of the Enterprise in Star Trek includes an aircraft carrier, a space shuttle, and seven starships to bear the proud name. Perhaps the most bizarre introduction to this family was the U.S.S. Enterprise-C, Yesterday's Enterprise, featured in the Next Generation episode, "Yesterday's Enterprise". We discover that the Enterprise-C met its end by defending the Klingon outpost at Narendra III from a Romulan attack. This paved the way to the Klingon/Federation treaty in the Next Generation era, and it makes sense for the Enterprise-C to have an ability that reflects its unorthodox historical contribution. But what of her captain?
Before Kathryn Janeway, there was Rachel Garrett. Fans had long speculated whether or not Star Trek would dare to put a woman in the captain's chair, and on February 19, 1990, they finally had their answer. October 2006 introduced Second Edition players to Captain Garrett in the form of the game's latest zero-cost personnel. But as with Leeta, Rebel Supporter and Tolian Soran, Renegade Scientist, Rachel Garrett has a significant drawback to offset her low cost. This isn't to say that Federation players will avoid using her; on the contrary, TNG Biology decks will try to use her ability to bounce the Vintner for more personnel downloads. With a Command star and Past icon to boot, Rachel Garrett looks to become a permanent fixture in Federation speed decks.
Players wanting to get the most out of Captain Garrett and the Enterprise-C will include obvious events such as Mission Accomplished and Inspiring Leader in their decks. But considering the total cost of this Commander/ship pair comes in at a measly 5 (which is even cheaper than the Baraka and Benjamin Sisko, Shipwright), expect to see this Ambassador-class ship from the past in your future.
