    Picture the scenario: Your opponent completes his or her third mission, and wins the game with exactly 100 points. If you could have had just one more turn, you would have won the game yourself, and then you'd be the one grinning stupidly at your opponent.

    This scenario must have happened just once too often to someone in the design team, because the Phoenix is the ultimate card to stall your opponent. Providing you can move this zero-range ship to a non-headquarters mission, and keep it damage free, your opponent will need an additional 10 points to win the game. That will force him or her to attack and damage the Phoenix, or to seek the 10 points elsewhere - possibly from a fourth mission.

    Unfortunately, there are two problems to overcome when you try to use the Phoenix. The first is that it's not going to be that easy to get the Phoenix to a non-headquarters mission. The only card that increases a ship's range by four is Quantum Slipstream Drive, for which you will need an Engineer personnel aboard. The alternative is to use one method to increase a ship's range by two, and then another method to increase it by another two. Depending on your deck, you will need to consider a combination of these four cards: Astrometrics Lab, which requires an Astrometrics personnel on board the ship; Inspiring Leader, which requires the ship's Commander (Zefram Cochrane, Ready to Make History) to be aboard; Reginald Barclay, Reclusive Engineer, which requires him to be aboard the ship and you to have two cards in hand to discard; or Preeminent Precision, which will stop a Starfleet Engineer aboard the ship. This last option may be the best though, as you can use it multiple times each turn, provided you have enough Starfleet Engineer personnel to be stopped.

    Once you fly the Phoenix to a non-headquarters mission, the second problem will become apparent: How do you keep it damage free? You don't need to keep the ship staffed to keep its ability active, but if you do leave one or more personnel on board, you might be able to prevent your opponent from damaging it through an engagement. Both Power to the Shields and Evasive Maneuvers can increase a ship's shields by four. All you need is an Engineer personnel or a Navigation personnel, respectively, aboard. You'll probably need to play two or three of these interrupts to get your shields high enough though, so if you had one personnel aboard the ship with both skills then you would have a greater chance of winning the engagement. Fortunately, every affiliation has at least one personnel with both skills, except for Starfleet and Federation TOS. They need not worry though, because there are several Non-Aligned personnel with both skills. Zefram Cochrane is the obvious choice, as you need him for use with Inspiring Leader. Alternately, you could go with the cheap option of one-cost Jakin.

    One last word of warning: In a multiplayer game, each copy of the Phoenix will increase the win condition by 10 points. An eight player game, with eight copies of the Phoenix on the table, will mean the winner must have 170 points!
