    Spock, Science Officer

This Card-Review article was written by openCards user CaptMDKirk and was published first on "Decipher's Website (decipher.com)".

"This person didn't, by any chance, have pointed ears? And an unerring knack for getting his friends into trouble?"

Data, Odo, Seven of Nine, and Phlox all have this Human/Vulcan to thank for blazing the trail of an otherworldly presence in the midst of humanity aboard Starfleet vessels. The first objective commentary on our species in all of Star Trek comes from the Original Series in the form of this "scientist of your acquaintance."

More like his human companions than he would hope to admit, Spock bears the command star, Original Series symbol, and past icon that several of his shipmates share. His skills are perhaps fewer than you'd expect, given his versatility aboard the original U.S.S. Enterprise. Not surprisingly given his Vulcan heritage, his attributes are above average. And at a cost of three counters, he helps his comrades avoid otherwise troublesome dilemmas like Aftermath and Training Accident.

Of course, Spock's real value is in his ability. By increasing his cost to five counters, you'll be able to better predict what obstacles your opponent has planned for your missions. The Science Officer also removes one of those obstacles from the game, symbolizing his research and preparation for each mission by reviewing all the available data and formulating the most efficient and logical course of action. But then again, even the most dedicated officers can benefit from the diversions of a Dabo table...

But can the Science Officer outshine his older self, the Trainee Instructor? After all, the two Spocks only share the skill of Science, showing the diversity in abilities that he demonstrated with age. Original Series players will have difficulty passing-up the Science Officer's upgrade, but given the choice of neutralizing a Damage marker, some may stick with the Genesis Spock, especially to avoid early space mission attempt mishaps.

Leonard Nimoy's portrayal of Spock, and overall involvement in Star Trek over the past forty years, has famously been a love/hate relationship. This, too, is borne-out in Spock, Science Officer. Original Series players will develop quite an affection for him, and their opponents will most definitely develop a loathing for everyone's favorite hybrid.
