    Gorn Encounter

This Card-Review article was written by Kathy McCracken and was published first on "Decipher's Website (decipher.com)" at Oct 31st, 2000.

This dilemma requires one of your personnel to fight a Gorn in a "contest of wits and brute strength," and a hefty dose of one or the other is required, along with a reasonably high number of non-special-download skills. The personnel will be killed (and the rest of the Away Team "stopped") unless the total of their number of skill dots and either their STRENGTH or CUNNING is greater than 12. Since the Metrons sent Kirk to face the Gorn without any equipment other than a universal translator, you can't use PADDs or hand weapons here - the only thing that counts is the printed attribute. Since the number of skill dots also never changes, you're stuck with your personnel's "native" abilities.

You don't get to choose your champion, either. The contestant will be the Away Team member with the most Leadership, so any Leadership x2 personnel will automatically face the Gorn. Captain Kirkimage, Dukatimage, or Kerasimage will survive; William T. Rikerimage, Gowronimage, or Kai Winnimage won't be so fortunate. No Leadership x2? Then one of your lesser lights with plain Leadership will probably bite the dust, as few personnel with four skills or under (aside from the Jem'Hadar) will have the STRENGTH or CUNNING to make the cut.

What if you have more than one personnel with the same level of Leadership, or even no Leadership at all in your Away Team? You're not off the hook, and in fact it's even worse, because now your opponent gets to select the victim. Since he gets to examine the entire personnel card, he's not likely to pick someone who can win this contest.

    Combos:

    • Lack of Preparationimage + Gorn Encounter: A good chance of picking off a mission-solver, especially if it's one of the 20 or so missions requiring Leadership.
    • Any wall requiring lots of attributes + Gorn Encounter + Borg opponent: Even with Dukat of Borgimage or Gowron of Borgimage in the hive, all the interlinked Borg will share exactly the same level of Leadership, so you can take your pick of the drones as Gorn-bait.
