Hints & strategie notes for this Deck

The announcement of the new tournament format, Standard, has rocked Middle-Earth. The exclusion of many powerful cards for both Shadow and Free People has launched a world-wide review of deck strategies. Let us take a few minutes to review how this format will affect the Ringwraiths.

The Black Riders lost their efficiency when Mines of Moria was introduced. O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! could cancel the first skirmish, Filibert Bolger, took care of the fierce skirmish, and Flaming Brand allowed any man to defeat just about every 'wraith. Now that these cards are excluded for the championship circle, Nazgûl will gain new strength. Although we no longer have access to the Fellowship site path, the arrival of many new plains sites give the Black Steed a place in every Ringwraith deck. Let's take a deeper look into the different strategies available to them in Standard play.

    Burden Deck

With a few Easterlings, burdens can quickly add up on the Ring-Bearer. Then come the Nazgûl who capitalize on your opponent's burdens using cards such as They Will Find the Ring which exerts a companion for each burden, The Ring Draws Them which adds 1 twilight for every burden, thus allowing you to play more than only 1-2 Nazgûl , and Dark Whispers which gives a Nazgul strength +3 and damage +2 if you spot 6 burdens. Finally, don't forget to add Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul, who will wound companions if you can spot 5 burdens.

    Hunt the Ring-Bearer Deck

A minimum of strength boosting is needed to allow Ulaire Otsea, Ringwraith in Twilight to win a skirmish and transfer Blade Tip to the Ring-Bearer. Resistance Becomes Unbearable and In The Ringwraith's Wake will force the Ring-Bearer to exert and wear the Ring. You then play Return to Its Master and force the Ring-bearer to skirmish a Nazgûl of your choosing.

    Overwhelmer Deck

Plain and simple: Nazgûl, Black Steeds, Nazgûl Swords, and strength modifiers. Play 1 or 2 Nazgûl with a Black Steed and a Sword to give an average strength of 14 - 16. Then, with several copies of Threshold of Shadow in your deck, you will have a good chance of overwhelming any strength 7 - 10 companion (a few other modifiers are possible according to your local meta game environment).

I have added a sample deck to give a general idea of what I would play at my local weekly tournament. My meta game is very large. I have to consider Gandalf/Ents with many strength modifiers, Rangers/Elves/Archery and even the occasional Ring-bound Ranger/Rohan horses. To counter these deck, I will play with Too Great and Terrible to solve all my Gandalf problems, Relentless Charge and Wreathed in Shadow to deal with any archery, and Black Breath to prevent much needed healing from Rohan.

If this doesn't kill your opponent, it will at least force him or her to stop at most sites, and so makes your fellowship's trip to site 9 easier.

The Ents of Fangorn expansion will surely help the Fierce Riders by giving them flight. Until then, play well, play smart and play fair!
