Hints & strategie notes for this Deck

One of the more popular deck types involving the Raiders in recent times has been the Southron/Hate deck. Based around surprise wounding, and several different types of "pay a cost to wound" minions, it has seen some success at tournament level, as well as being a fun deck to play.

There are several variations on the theme, and it's possible to mix in Uruk Archery and healing prevention to good effect, but the basic package involves a sufficient number of Sauron minions to allow for all the exertions that the Sauron out-of-skirmish wounding cards require, and a sufficient number of Southron minions to balance the long time that Sauron is roaming, and provide a cheaper method of directing wounds to particular companions.

Key to the deck working well is focusing wounds on individual companions. Ideally, you should be able to direct a minimum of three wounds per turn after site 4, killing at least one companion each time. If a minion wins its skirmish conventionally, that's a bonus, but it's neither expected, nor needed (though some of the minions can be tough to beat one-on-one). If you can get some undirected wounding going early, such as Under the Watching Eye, or Orc Bowmen, this can dramatically increase the effectiveness of directed wounding, by allowing your directed wounds to kill companions even more quickly.

One of the weaknesses of this deck is against large fellowships, who don't suffer too much from a few deaths, and against whom it's difficult to whittle away enough companions to get to Frodo. It's often worthwhile to include something to specifically address this sort of specific weakness in a deck, and in this case that means putting in a couple of copies of Ulaire Cantea, Lieutenant of Dol Guldur.
