Ambassador Tomalak
Ambassador Tomalak counts as "matching commander" for the following ships or facilities:
- Decius (2 R 122) from Alternate Universe Alternate Universe

This Card-Review was written by Kathy McCracken and was published first on "Major Rakals Tal Shiar Headquarters (members.cox.net/majorrakal)" at Oct 3rd, 1999.

This article is part of the article serie "Romulan Review" from "Major Rakal (Kathy Mc Kracken)". Also see:

Aefvadh! Six months ago I finally reviewed Tomalak from the Premiere set and concluded that, despite certain shortcomings, he still had value in a Romulan deck. Certainly he would never be overshadowed by Commander Tomalak. Now in Blaze of Glory, we have a new Tomalak who is worthy of the interesting character...

Ambassador Tomalak

Now that's more like it. Let's see how he stacks up to the old Tomalak. An incredibly high (for a Romulan) INTEGRITY of 8 is 2 more than Tomalak's, with STRENGTH reduced by 2 to compensate (no problem, I'd give up 2 STRENGTH in exchange for 2 INTEGRITY in a Romulan any day). Same command star, same Diplomacy and Leadership. He's also a matching commander for the Decius, via his own lore (Tomalak is the Decius' matching commander by virtue of the ship's own lore). And that's where the resemblance ends.

First, add an Alternate Universe icon. Now he's not only able to contribute either his command star or his Alternate Universe icon to staffing the Decius; he can also report directly aboard the ship with Crew Reassignment (if you prefer not to go the Ready Room Door download route). Of course you need an AU Door or Space-Time Portal, but what deck doesn't have at least the latter these days anyway for its other uses? You can even drop him as part of the crew with an STP once-per-game Alternate Universe ship report-with-crew.

Next, exchange Tomalak's OFFICER classification for V.I.P. Not so good; as I noted in Tomalak's review, OFFICER tends to be more generally useful.

Now, add Exobiology (lots of dilemmas need this now to pass) and Computer Skill (can't have too many of these now with Access Denied floating around) for dilemma-passing and mission-solving. Top it off with a special download for the Federation/Romulan treaty; with a number of Affiliation Federation/Affiliation Romulan personnel available, the ability to mix and match them could be very useful for attempting Federation missions.

We still don't know what to make of his icon. This mysterious icon, which first appeared on Admiral Picard, Commander Data and Commander Troi from the Two-Player Game, still has not been developed in any way. But apparently the concept is still alive, with such a late entry as Ambassador Tomalak carrying the same icon.

He still can't report for free to the Office of the Proconsul (sadly, it does not include Ambassadors) or solve Investigate Coup--you need the "real" Tomalak for that. But I think the added skills make up for that. In any case, you don't even need to choose between them. The Ambassador is not an instance of the Tomalak persona, so they can both be in play at the same time, giving you the best of both universes.

The Major's Combos:

  • Ambassador Tomalak + Commander Tomalak + Major Rakal + Decius + Space-Time Portal: Even Romulans can use an STP drop. Throw in Dr. Telek R’Mor and some Non-Aligned Alternate Universe folks tailored to your missions. Use Crew Reassignment to get them there if they weren't in your hand when you did the STP drop.
  • Ambassador Tomalak + Major Rakal + Treaty: Federation/Romulan: If you need Major Rakal's Diplomacy and extra INTEGRITY more than her Tal Shiar and Treachery, download the treaty so she can switch to Federation mode and still stay in your Romulan Away Team.
  • Ambassador Tomalak + Commander Tomalak + Tomalak: A great Diplomacy deck, and fun too.
