TALLERA

Not quite the "six-skilled Romulan" that we've been hearing persistent rumors of, but she is the first triple-affiliation personnel (granting that "affiliation" is a misnomer for Non-aligned, as with Garak). Her Non-aligned icon lets her work with the Klingons, as well as the upcoming Cardassians, or anyone else-except of course the Feds.

Now, what good is her Federation icon, if she can't work with Feds? Well, note that her restriction box reads just a little bit different than those of Galen or Nick Locarno; while they won't work with Federation affiliation, Tallera won't work with Federation affiliation personnel. That means that, like Major Rakal, she could fly a Federation ship, and more important, attempt a Federation mission, with appropriate NA support crew. Of course, she also enables the seeding of a second outpost like the other dual-affiliates.

With Tallera, the Romulans add another dual-classification personnel to the fold. The combination of SECURITY and SCIENCE is an odd one, but might prove useful: many dilemmas require either MEDICAL + SCIENCE or MEDICAL + SECURITY to pass, with Barclay’s Protomorphosis Disease requiring all three. So a single MEDICAL with Tallera can pass a considerable number of killer dilemmas. And she enables a couple of unique Kurlan Naiskos combos (see below).

Her other skills, for the most part, are nothing spectacular. Computer Skill and Treachery are common enough among Romulans and Non-aligned (though to be sure they are required by plenty of Romulan missions), and Leadership is mainly useful in allowing her to lead in battle. But her remaining skill is so far unique outside of the blue cards. Yes, Tallera finally brings "Mindmeld for the rest of us." Now I'll have to work up a Mindmeld strategy for the Romulans, something I've never been able to even consider before. (Let's see, she can gain Treachery from almost any Rommie...) And oh, yes, she overcomes Interphasic Plasma Creatures, too.

Her attributes, unfortunately, are pretty lackluster. She's a sitting duck for Firestorm, Thought Fire, and Hunter Gangs, and a STRENGTH of 7 isn't great for a Romulan. (An interesting side note: the Vulcan Stone of Gol would kill Tallera, Narik (EG), and Vekor (all CUNNING 7), while sparing Galen (8).)

Ironically, her NA icon actually makes her more useful to the Klingons than to the Romulans. They gain access to Mindmeld, and now have someone they can use to "espionage" both Federation and Romulan missions, while Tallera adds nothing there that the Romulans don't already have. And the Klingons have more need for Treachery and Computer Skill than do the Rommies.

The Major's Combos:

  • Tallera + Taris + Major Rakal + Kareen Brianon + Decius + Kurlan Naiskos.
  • Tallera + Ja’rod + Kurn + K’chiQ (with MEDICAL skill) + I.K.C. Fek’Ihr + Kurlan Naiskos.
  • Tallera + Galen + Baran + Narik + Vekor + Mercenary Ship (just for the heck of it; but I count at least 11 missions this team could do, though a couple will need a Mindmeld, and several more if you add Roga Danar).
