The big bad guy of Star Trek finally makes his appearance in Second Edition. That's right, boys and girls, better step-up your game because Khan is coming to town. So, is the genetically engineered superhuman who once ruled parts of Earth with an iron fist worth the wait?
For starters, Khan has some impressive skills. Exobiology can't be overstated for its dilemma-busting power. Programming is also key on several dilemmas, and Leadership and 2 Treachery make him an excellent fit for Klingon engagement decks or Cardassian capture decks.
And attributes? Well, let's just say they're right up there for a genetically enhanced personnel. But, now the real meat – Khan's game text. The big man has a special ability that's useful in all kinds of decks. His attribute-sapping ability isn't limited to their Cunning or their Integrity or their Strength. When he's present with just one of your opponent's personnel, they're all attributes minus one. Khan's a walking, talking, monologuing version of A Living Death, except that Khan doesn't care if you have Treachery or not. So, if you're going after combat with Assault cards in a Klingon deck with Heart of Glory (or other cards like that) you can hedge your bets in the resulting fight by bringing Khan along. Throw in K'Temoc, Long Slumbering Commander for a little more Assault-oriented fun.
If capture is more your style, Khan will easily fit into a Cardassian capture deck. Use Assault events that have a captivating result like Apprehended to start combat, again with Khan's text kicking in, and you'll probably grab a hapless victim. The big man can even help out with his own tailored capture dilemma, Not Quite Domesticated Pets. Sure, its first set of requirements might seem easy – unless Khan is there to reduce your opponent's personnel's attributes.
But, just to show that even Khan can be convinced to work with his hated enemies every so often – his excellency would even prove useful in a Genetically Enhanced theme deck focusing on the that keyword and We're Mutants plus Arik Soong, Father of Many.
Hopefully, I've put the bug in your ear on the virtues of Khan. And if not, wait a few moments and you'll be much more open to suggestion.
