    Chakotay, Bridge Between Two Crews

At first glance, you may think the only reason for adding Chakotay, Bridge Between Two Crews to your deck would be for his ability. Destroying an event in your core to prevent a Federation personnel from being stopped is indeed powerful, and will greatly help you out against Tragic Turnimage dilemma piles. However, Chakotay offers several other benefits to a Voyager deck that may not be immediately apparent.

Something as simple as a command icon is often overlooked, but can mean the difference between staffing a ship and being stranded. We know personnel can play directly to U.S.S. Voyager, Home Away From Homeimage when it is at a Delta quadrant mission, so being stranded is not as bad a situation as other affiliations may face. It's no good playing personnel directly to the ship though, if you don't have enough personnel with command icons in your deck. Ignoring Non-Aligned personnel, there are only six other Voyager-icon personnel with Command icons. That's not a huge problem, but it is something that your opponent may be able to take advantage of during games.

Something else to take a look at are three of the four skills Chakotay has to offer. Anthropology, Diplomacy and Honor are three useful skills, but they come in short supply aboard Voyager - unlike the shuttles! If you ignore Non-Aligned personnel, Voyager's only other source of Anthropology is Tuvok, Chief of Securityimage, while Kathryn Janeway is the only other source of Diplomacy. There is slightly more Honor, on two other personnel, but these shortages could mean that Voyager decks may have to rely on Non-Aligned personnel for support. If they don't, then they may have some trouble overcoming dilemmas such as Formal Hearingimage, Gomtuu Shock Waveimage, Temptationimage and Whisper in the Darkimage.

With Voyager personnel being as resourceful as you'd expect from the Federation, these skill-gaps don't mean the affiliation is unplayable. Indeed, when you do manage to overcome this shortage, then some missions for Chakotay to look out for include Instruct Advanced Droneimage, Observe Kazon Ritualimage and Obtain Advanced Technologyimage.

In summary, Chakotay has an all-important Command icon, three very useful skills and a fantastic ability. Why not just rename him Chakotay, Going to be a Target?
